Sounds like someone whose been through a personal growth journey.
Each one of us has their puzzle and we should keep on trying to solve it and help others solve theirs whenever we can.
If you don't mind, we can have a discussion about our journeys. I have also tried reddit which is also good for the public intellectual route and the content about Japan.
And I also read commentaries on paradise lost. I put it up there with Dante's inferno and William Blake's work.
I left a text inbox, you can answer whenever you have time, take care
I've been burnt out of late, mostly due to work, but also just losing some creative spark for a while. A little frustration, a little irritation at the seeming need to push the marketing/social networking side of the writing wheel rather than just writing! I know that drive will return, but I'm certain dialled down to the backburner right now. I'm even struggling to find concrete time to devote to reading, which is never a good sign for me.
Anyway, all those dotpoints sound great! Hope all is going well in Japan.
More and more people around me are asking Chat GPT questions like you asked—and its a noble question, part of a more noble quest—and yet, I wonder how we are supposed to get answers to questions that we don't know we are supposed to ask—in other words, how are you supposed to get a machine who is trained on all material that already exists (the way others have taken) to give you feedback on navigating something that doesn't (your way)?
In the past, people brought questions like that to their social or religious or mentor figures, now we turn to Chat GPT—and maybe that's not so different in a sense—but I wonder whether you, and me, and those around me, are asking the right questions to begin with. Whether there isn't a gulf between what we think we want and what you really need after all.
Mostly, I wonder, if there isn't something else to listen to and something else to ask.
With your deep dive into japan life. have you considered a youtube channel. may add new followers back to your writing while also diversifying and adding a few extra bucks if channel goes well. of course all depends if you’re comfortable in front of a camera.
You've answered your own question there, I'm not comfortable in front of a camera. Plus as far as I've heard, Youtube isn't as low-barrier as it used to be, the standards for production quality are much higher now etc. I'd rather focus on writing!
That said, I've been using Instagram more intentionally to share impressions of life in Japan. I might connect that more to my Substack & add a profile link. (If you're curious, you can find me under vanessaglau.)
Sounds like we are on a similar creative path. Or maybe I relate because you’ve so elegantly distilled a complex issue into something many of us indies can understand. Thanks for this fresh perspective on public intellectual(ism?). Wishing you all the best and here to support where I can.

I hear you and I'm with you, Vanessa.

Thank you! All the best to you too, your endeavours are paving the way!
Sounds like a plan. Do it your way!
Thank you, Shoni! I’ll probably lose sight of “my way” again but such is the writing life…
