I read Piranesi when it came out and I remember how fascinated I was regarding the House and the concept of being imprisoned in one’s mind. I remember that I interpreted the House as an inner retreat of Piranesi after experiencing trauma. I can be completely wrong about this as it has been a while since I have read the book, but this is what have stayed in my memory.
Sounds valid as well. I found it more fun to see the House as a real place because Piranesi isn't the only one who interacts with it but yes, the way it seems to care for him, letting him survive when it really isn't an easy environment to live in, might be completely in his head. The joys of having a first-person narrator!

Definitely need to reread it.
