Love the reading list, Vanessa. I've often wanted to get into some manga, but just had no idea where to start. Call of the Night sounds very good and appealing. Are you reading these physically (sounds so) or digitally? If the latter, is there a preferred app?

I keep meaning to ask what your job is over in Japan. I can't remember if you've said before.

Have you played any of the Person games? Persona 5 Royale was my first dabble, and it's incredible. The Yakuza games also seen to bring some Japanese culture to the west in game format, though I've only played some of Like a Dragon via Gamepass a while ago.

Let me know how you like it! Yes, I read physically so I'm not sure which app you could use...

I'm a linguistic QA specialist for mobile games so I mainly test German translations in games.

Of course I've played some Persona! Yakuza looks good but isn't really my type of game. Recently I've been focusing on Nier Automata & finishing up Pokemon Violet.

Amazing. Super cool job. I've heard so many good things about Nier, but never got around to it.

It's been fun!

And yes, I'm enjoying Nier a lot. Everyone who has played it seems to love it & I can see why. Big recommend if you do get a chance!

Great reading your updates from Japan 🇯🇵 It seems like you’re having a good time. I read that Chinese read lots of serialized fiction novels online. Is it the same in Japan?

It's not as big as in China but it definitely exists! Sometimes I see manga or light novels that apparently started out as serialized web novels.

Great to hear you're setting in OK and nice recap of reading material, what about the games, though? Which ones? And yes, keep that Spice flowing! 👍

I didn't mention any games as it takes me much longer to get through them or at least play enough to have an informed opinion. Mainly Nier Automata (for the first time), Pokemon Violet & recently Hogwarts Legacy (I know about the controversy so I'm not going to say more. Suffice to say, I really wanted to check it out for myself). People at work have been recommending Omori to me too.

Fair enough. I know those games only by title and Hogwarts I have no desire to play regardless of any controversy. Omori I don't know! Hm, gameplay reminds me of Undertale another fantastic game). Interesting! Might have to check that one out. Thanks, Vanessa.

It's so nice to see two series I've been working on in your newsletter. The Bakemonogatari comparison sounds a bit off to me as well, maybe it's like the ubiquitous "Like Murakami" on book blurbs. Kotoyama's work reminds me a lot more of Ueshiba Riichi (Discommunication), as it feels like reading a Wundertüte of everything the author loves.

Btw, I read Kuragehime and Aku no hana almost in their entirety during my Japanese train commutes (although not on a digital screen).

I think they might have meant the humor & tone of Yofukashi no uta as that feels quite a bit like Bake to me. Besides Frieren, what else did you work on here?
